ABOUT

Chance Nabweya Community Organisation was founded by Joseph Nataka.  A member of the community who knew first hand what it was like to lack a consistent, education in Eastern Uganda.

Initially the charity worked to support families within their local communities; paying school fees, skills training for adults, providing school materials and distributing donations such as clothes.  The long term goal was for the charity to use the buildings on their site, to set up and run their own primary school.

A 2017 census listed the population of Uganda as 37.7 million, with 80% of primary aged children enrolled at a school.  This figure has been steadily decreasing over the last 10 years.  According to the census, only 3% of the population own a computer or laptop, with only 6% of the population having regular access to the internet. Within Eastern Uganda, children under 5 are most at risk of illness.  The census found that only 6.2% of households had adequate sanitation facilities (including soap and water).

10.1 million people in Uganda are considered to be living in poverty - with a high number of those living in Bududa.  64.3% of families in Bududa are unable to afford 3 meals a day.

The average ANNUAL income per household in Uganda is equivalent to $200 US.  Education in Uganda is provided for free, but schools ask for fees out of necessity, as government funding does not cover all of their outgoings.

Uganda ranks 200 out of 229 countries, making it one of the poorest in the world.  Chance Nabweya is not a large company, distributing funds to a number of smaller projects, while keeping a percentage of donations as profit.  Chance Nabweya is a small community organisation, run by the community, for the community.  All they want is an education for their children and to grow the prosperity of their community.  These are children and families who want to learn, they want to work and earn their own money.  They want a future for their children that's better than their present.  All money donated to Chance Nabweya, is spent on the childrens education and the community.  It is a non-profit organisation, run by volunteers.  Volunteers that have limited access to the world outside their community, but are desperate for help.

In Uganda, school entry starts at age 6.  In many areas there are more than 40 pupils for every 1 teacher.  Classes can have more than 70 children (often mixed ages, due to late enrollment and grade repetition).  Female school attendance and attainment is lower than that of males in the area. This is something Chance Nabweya wants to rectify, giving everyone an equal chance of an education.

The site run by the charity, already had school buildings in place.  But the school had never opened due to funding and a lack of teachers.  The school is located along the Manafwa River (where the children love to play and swim), in the sub-county of Nabweya.  It was built under the NUSAF programme*, with support of the Ugandan government.  Initially the charity supported pupils attending other schools, until they were able to open their own.  In February 2019, Chance Nabweya Community Organisation opened Bunyanga Bright Primary School.  Their aim is now to give free education to all children within the community, and to provide the highest standard of teaching.

Chance Nabweya Community Organisation is registered with the Bududa District, Community Based Organisations Register.  Reg. BDD/2076
